The staff of the Exploratory Studies Village provides social, academic, wellness, and diversity-related programs designed to help village members connect with the campus and support academic and personal success. As a result of these programs, the Exploratory Studies Villag has been named “Village of the Year” by the students on the university’s Inter-residence Council (IRC) three times. The following are just some of the annual events students can look forward to as a member of the village.
Community Outreach and Reflection (COR) Program
This series of programs are created and implemented by Resident Mentors. These programs are hosted throughout the semester and focus on creating a sense of belonging, academic success, major and career explorations, and diversity. Leadership Potential Retreat
Each year the village takes a group of emerging leaders on a weekend retreat filled with leadership development and team building activities. Though we’re always seeking to improve the program with new activities and challenges, past activities have included StrengthsQuest, True Colors, communication styles, decision-making, and many more!
Each activity is designed to help village members learn more about themselves, who they are as leaders, and how to work with others. It is not uncommon to see former participants take on leadership roles after returning to campus. Many of our students have gone on to become Resident Mentors, Orientation Leaders, University Ambassadors, and so on.
Faculty Chew and Chat
Resident Mentors invite faculty members from various colleges across campus to come into the Village to interact with residents over dinner. Faculty members engage students in conversations about majors from their respective colleges and opportunities to get involved within that major. This allows students to get to know faculty members outside of the classroom and also an opportunity to work on their interpersonal skills.
End of the Year Banquet
The end of the year banquet serves as an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of students and Resident Mentors within in the Village throughout the year.
