  • OPEN FORUM: The New Title IX Regulations and What They Mean

    January 7, 2019  11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Stewart Theatre, 2610 Cates Ave, Raleigh, NC 27695, USA

    Doors open at 11:00 am

On November 29, 2018, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (“OCR”) proposed new regulations relating to Title IX. [Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is a federal law that states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."]

Panel members from the Office of General Counsel, Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, Office of Student Conduct and the Women’s Center will provide a high-level overview of the proposed changes and then facilitate a discussion to hear thoughts from members of the NC State community.

Attend NC State’s open forum to learn about the proposed regulations and how to provide comments to the Department of Education.

Why You Should Attend: You have the right to provide public comment on the proposed regulations as a private citizen during the public comment phase.

As part of the rule making process, the proposed regulations are open for public comment through January 28, 2019.

Please assist us by sharing this announcement broadly with your fellow community members and through your communication channels.

See also the proposed regulations and instructions on how to comment for more information.
We look forward to receiving your input at the forum.

Counselors will be on site for students who need support.

About the Changes - The proposed regulations are summarized as follows:

“The proposed regulations would clarify and modify Title IX regulatory requirements pertaining to the availability of remedies for violations, the effect of Constitutional protections, the designation of a coordinator to address sex discrimination issues, the dissemination of a nondiscrimination policy, the adoption of grievance procedures, and the process to claim a religious exemption. The proposed regulations would also specify how recipient schools and institutions covered by Title IX (hereinafter collectively referred to as recipients or schools) must respond to incidents of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination. The proposed regulations are intended to promote the purpose of Title IX by requiring recipients to address sexual harassment, assisting and protecting victims of sexual harassment and ensuring that due process protections are in place for individuals accused of sexual harassment.” (Proposed Rulemaking, www.regulations.gov)

  • Wildlife and Outdoor Career Day

    March 1, 2019  9:00 am - 1:30 pm

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and the Wake County Wildlife Club invite you and your students to a Wildlife and Outdoor Career Day at the 2019 Dixie Deer Classic. In years past, we have held youth events associated with the Dixie Deer Classic to expose high school students to careers in the outdoors. We return on March 1, 2019 with another program designed to help students in the classroom and beyond.

You may be familiar with the adage, if you find a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. However, many students don’t know how to prepare and get hired for that job. Technical schools, mentors, and/or college programs can lay the foundation that may lead some of your students to work with a non-governmental organization, government agency, private companies, or start his/her own business. The “Wildlife and Outdoors Career Day” aims to steer students in the right direction answering questions like, what are the next steps and who can help you pursue the type of career you seek?

Our “Wildlife and Outdoor Career Day” program will feature numerous outdoor career professionals, who will present concurrently to groups of 20 to 30 students at a time. Each presenter will provide information on his/her background, education, preparation, and what led them to where they are now.
We are currently planning to hold two 2-hour programs, beginning at 9:00 AM.

We are in the process of confirming speakers that have a proven track record in their fields. Below is a sampling of the careers that will be showcased:
Engineer (boat dock design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance) – NCWRC
Federal Fish and Wildlife Agency – USFWS
    Fisheries Biologist – NCWRC
    Forestry
    Hunting Heritage Biologist - NCWRC
    Land Trust Specialist
    Outdoor Education
    Outdoor Photography and Writing
    State Park Ranger
    Trapping
    Wildlife Biologist - NCWRC
    Wildlife Law Enforcement - NCWRC

Students, teachers, and chaperones participating in Outdoor Careers Day at the Dixie Deer Classic will be given special passes (free of charge) where they can attend other seminars and explore visit some of the 300 booths at 2019 Dixie Deer Classic. Education-focused booths within the main hall include: Birds of Prey, NC Reptiles, NC Wildlife, NC Wild Turkey Federation, and others. Preregistration is required.
