  • Woodcock Walk

    February 17, 2019  4:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Meet at Bragaw Volleyball Courtyard to Depart

Interested students MUST register to participate using the following link: https://reporter.ncsu.edu/link/instanceview?courseID=DASA-ECOVIL-013&deptName=DASA&instanceID=000001

Transportation will be provided by EcoVillage; departure from Bragaw Hall volleyball courtyard at 4:30PM

Woodcock are a species of ground-nesting bird with very interesting courtship displays. February is the best time to witness these courtship rituals. In December the EcoVillage partnered with Wake Audubon and the College of Natural Resources to help clear nesting and courtship habitat at Schenck Forest for American woodcock - now it's time to witness the results of that work!

Michael Burke described the ritual in a 2016 article: "Dusk was overtaking the field, but the action was just heating up. “Peent!” The sound pierced the evening sky. “Peent!” There again was the insistent nasal call.

As we peered into the twilight, a bird shot straight up and then began a dizzying spiral dance as it gained altitude. Fifty feet. A hundred. Two hundred. The wings twittered as it continued to rise to more than 300 feet.

Suddenly, the bird dropped to the earth, wings atwitter, landing almost exactly where it sprang into the sky. And then he did it again."

Join EcoVillage, Wake Audubon, and Dr. Lara Pacifici's Vertebrate Natural History class to view this fascinating natural spectacle.

    Talley Student Union Room 4280

Student organization Wolves for Wolves will be hosting guest speaker Emily Blanchard from the Wildlands Network and invites EcoVillage to attend. Ms. Blanchard will be discussing ongoing wolf conservation efforts, including how organizations like hers utilize the legal system for conservation, and the importance of wildlife litigation.

At Wildlands Network, Emily helps manage a portfolio of field research projects, including camera trapping in the red wolf recovery area in eastern North Carolina, bridge monitoring for wildlife in Durham, and elk movements with GPS collars in western North Carolina. In addition, she assists with GIS mapping and managing a North Carolina wildlife roads working group. She also leads the student Red Wolf Working Group in the Durahm-Chapel Hill-Raliegh “Triangle” region of North Carolina.

Emily graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University in 2010, where she majored in environmental policy. She then worked in the environmental health and justice field before being selected for a year-long fellowship for her environmental photojournalism project, Faces of Environmental Change. She obtained her Master of Environmental Management in 2015 from Duke University with a concentration in ecosystem science and conservation. Her Masters research focused on forest elephants and the effects of hunting on wildlife communities in Gabon.

  • Wildlife and Outdoor Career Day

    March 1, 2019  9:00 am - 1:30 pm
North Carolina State Fairgrounds 1025 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607, United States

    Preregistration is required: https://www.ncwildlife.org/Learning/Courses-Seminars-Workshops/Project-Wild-Catch-and-Outdoor-Skills/Event-Registration/PageId/SignUpToEvent/EventId/3253/e/wildlife-and-outdoor-career-day-1-mar-2019

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and the Wake County Wildlife Club invite you and your students to a Wildlife and Outdoor Career Day at the 2019 Dixie Deer Classic. In years past, we have held youth events associated with the Dixie Deer Classic to expose high school students to careers in the outdoors. We return on March 1, 2019 with another program designed to help students in the classroom and beyond.

You may be familiar with the adage, if you find a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. However, many students don’t know how to prepare and get hired for that job. Technical schools, mentors, and/or college programs can lay the foundation that may lead some of your students to work with a non-governmental organization, government agency, private companies, or start his/her own business. The “Wildlife and Outdoors Career Day” aims to steer students in the right direction answering questions like, what are the next steps and who can help you pursue the type of career you seek?

Our “Wildlife and Outdoor Career Day” program will feature numerous outdoor career professionals, who will present concurrently to groups of 20 to 30 students at a time. Each presenter will provide information on his/her background, education, preparation, and what led them to where they are now.
We are currently planning to hold two 2-hour programs, beginning at 9:00 AM.

We are in the process of confirming speakers that have a proven track record in their fields. Below is a sampling of the careers that will be showcased:
Engineer (boat dock design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance) – NCWRC
Federal Fish and Wildlife Agency – USFWS
    Fisheries Biologist – NCWRC
    Forestry
    Hunting Heritage Biologist - NCWRC
    Land Trust Specialist
    Outdoor Education
    Outdoor Photography and Writing
    State Park Ranger
    Trapping
    Wildlife Biologist - NCWRC
    Wildlife Law Enforcement - NCWRC

Students, teachers, and chaperones participating in Outdoor Careers Day at the Dixie Deer Classic will be given special passes (free of charge) where they can attend other seminars and explore visit some of the 300 booths at 2019 Dixie Deer Classic. Education-focused booths within the main hall include: Birds of Prey, NC Reptiles, NC Wildlife, NC Wild Turkey Federation, and others. Preregistration is required.
