Village Bonds: Bowen & Beyond

Village Bonds: Bowen & Beyond

One of the most critical components of a Village is the shared living experience. The Impact Leadership Village has been housed in Bowen Residence Hall since 2008. However, Villagers stay connected long after they leave Bowen. In fact, three Villagers from the 2017 ILV cohort have stayed connected since their first day of the village, through road trips, study abroad, graduations, and more. Thomas, Nick, and Michael took some time to reflect on how they formed their connection that has lasted over the last 3 years:

  • How did you all meet? What were your first impressions of each other in the Village?
    1. Thomas-We all lived on the same floor of the village or freshman year. My first impressions of every one were that they were all way cooler than me haha!
    2. Nick-Michael, Thomas, and I met through the village because we were in the same suite together. We later met adam who lived above us through village interactions. I think my first impression of all of them was very positive, they all seemed like welcoming and positive people.
    3. Michael-Some of my first impressions were that these guys were different than anyone I had met. I knew we would all be good friends and that we would make some fun memories, which is exactly what we did!Village Bonds: Bowen & Beyond Thomas, Nick, and Michael pose with other Villagers during the 2017 Shack-a-thon as first-year students.
  • What are some of your strongest memories with each other while you were in the Village?
    1. Thomas-I always loved our broomball event! Also the corn maze event we planned in the fall of our freshman year.
    2. Nick-One of the strongest memories of Thomas and Michael was just hanging out with each other in the suite, we would just hang out with each other when we were bored and we began to bond. Adam and I began to do activities through the village meetings and allowed us to hang out with him more outside of village activities.
    3. Michael-One of the strongest memories I have is making a promise with the three of us to live together in our junior year. We were freshmen at the time, but even a handshake from a freshman is a done deal. It was pretty cool seeing it come to fruition during our junior year and continuing into our senior year.
  • After your time as Villagers, how have you stayed connected with one another?
    1. Thomas-After we left the village, we all became roommates in an apartment off-campus! We also had a lot of classes together.
    2. Nick-We would still hang out a handful of times throughout the month and text occasionally. Then we agreed to live with each other for our Junior year and now senior year as well 🙂
    3. Michael-As I previously mentioned, we knew we were all living together during our junior year so we were all pretty close as is. We made it a point to visit each other, whether it was in Bowen Hall, University Towers, or Bowen Hall.
  • How did you all decide to live together again, off-campus?
    1. Thomas-We we were all interested in similar things, and we wanted to keep the idea of the village by living with other people that would always be challenging us to be our best.
    2. Nick-Since we all got along so well during our Freshman year we decided that we would all enjoy continuing the bonds we made in the village.
    3. Michael-As I have previously mentioned, we knew we were going to live together during our junior year! It was awesome seeing the promise come full-circle and actually be fulfilled. I like to think we all agree, especially since we decided to all room together for another year!
  • How has being in the Village together shaped your ongoing friendship?
    1. Thomas-It really served as a solid foundation, since we all lived together for an entire year.
    2. Nick-Since we all met together, we all care about each other more than a friend whos living with another friend’s friend. We all basically know each other the same and are super comfortable and that allows us to have a stronger friendship.
    3. Michael-The village was where we all met. It allowed us a place to form a friendship right off the bat and many memories. From freshman year to senior year, we will have memories that will last us a lifetime and I am confident that we can all agree.Village Bonds: Bowen & Beyond
